Wood Shapers

Wood shapers do work much the same as done by a router.

Components

  • switch
  • fence
  • fence clamp
  • cutter
  • table groove for sliding jig
  • table

Instead of the machine moving over the work as with the router the work is passed over the machine. The shaper has greater capacity and power and is capable of many more intricate cuts.

With a shaper you can make your own molding, beading and decorative cuts in wood. This is limited only by the number of cutters you have.

It is a high speed machine with its spindle rotating at 10,000 RPM. It is best to be careful and alert when using it.

When making a cove cut along the side of a board the cutter is mounted on the spindle and locked in place. Work is fed against the rotation of the cutter and at the same time pushed against the fence.

Work which cannot be shaped against the fence can usually be shaped by guiding it against a collar below the cutter. The only drawback is that the collar may slightly burn or score work if passed too slowly.
